HAZARD — Reenactors from the Battle of Leatherwood recently visited the Perry County Fiscal Court. The dedicated group of reenactors are gearing up for their annual Battle of Leatherwood in October.
The Battle of Leatherwood reenactment will take place on Oct. 27-29 in Cornettsville this year. The event is free to the public. The only thing that costs money is food, drinks, and souvenirs.
The three-day event receives some funding from Hazard/Perry County Tourism and the Perry County Fiscal Court, along with other surrounding Fiscal Courts. The event also depends on local businesses and citizens to help fund the reenactment.
The Battle of Leatherwood Reenactment Corporation Chairman Kerry Crutcher said the reenactment is important because it not only educates both children and adults in this area’s history, but also offers people to get together and enjoy entertainment.
Crutcher said they receive great support from the communities in eastern Kentucky. Schools in Perry County and the surrounding counties will take their students on field trips to the Battle of Leatherwood reenactment.
The reenactment helps preserve this county’s rich history by giving an interactive look into the lives of soldiers and everyday people that lived in eastern Kentucky during the American Civil War.
The three-day event starts off with Education Day on Oct. 27. There will be lectures and demonstrations throughout the day. At noon on Oct. 28, the ladies wil host a tea party followed by a 2 p.m. battle between The Union and Confederate forces. A ball will follow the battle at 7 p.m. Church service will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29. A battle will follow the church service at 2 p.m.
During the Perry County Fair, which takes places June 15-17, reenactors from the Battle of Leatherwood will partake in several skirmishes throughout each day of the fair. In addition to the skirmishes, the reenactors will have camps set up around the fair that will fairgoers a chance to see what it was like for soldiers during the American Civil War.
