LEXINGTON — Harlan’s run in the KBA State Tournament ended Sunday against George Rogers Clark, one of the top teams in the 10th Region.

The Cardinals raced to a 22-6 lead after one quarter and were never threatened in coasting to a 64-23 victory.

Brennan Canada was one of four Cardinals in double figures with 12 points. Will Philpot and Isaiah Nolan scored 11 each. Chase Taylor added 10.

Harlan was led by sophomore guard Jacob Wilson with nine points.

Wilson and Jared Hawkins accounted for all of the Harlan points in the opening period as each hit 3-pointers. A Jordan Akal basket and two free throws by Wilson were the only points for the Dragons in the second quarter as the GRC lead grew to 38-10 by halftime.

Kilian Ledford hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter to lead the Dragons, who were outscored 11-10 in the period.

Harlan finished 7-13 for the summer, but the Green Dragons played a tough schedule, especially at the KBA and the Tri-State Team Camp at Lincoln Memorial University.

“This, as most summers, I typically focus on individual players getting experience, and camaraderie. I was happy with our progress,” second-year Harlan coach Derrick Akal said. “We played some good competition.”

Harlan brings back three starters — junior guards Kilian Ledford and Cade Barnes and sophomore guard Jacob Wilson, from a 14-15 team that finished as the 52nd District runner-up and advanced to the 13th Region Tournament for the first time since 2006.

Junior forward Cade Barnes and junior guard Jared Hawkins are expected to round out the starting lineup after starting most of the summer. Sophomore forward Jonathan Eldridge and eighth-grade guard Jordan Akal could also be in the picture as they continue to progress. Senior forward Kendal Brock and senior guard Tyler Carmical also saw extensive action in the summer. Junior guards Caleb Adkins and Tate Bryson provide depth, along with sophomore guard Charles David Morton.

“We got good minutes from our bench this summer,” Akal said. “We have a lot of room for improvement, and we will work hard to improve.”

George Rogers Clark (64) — Jehdon Jenkins 4, Isaiah Noland 11, Tydarius Clark 14, Chase Taylor 10, Jordan Graham 6, Brennan Canada 12, Will Philpot 11.

Harlan (23) — Kilian Ledford 6, Jacob Wilson 9, Jared Hawkins 5, Jordan Akal 2, Jon Eldridge 1.
