LOS ANGELES (AP) — Their Southern California itinerary is a 10-year-old boy's dream: Disneyland, a Lakers game and a visit to the Santa Monica beach. But most of the players from a basketball academy in the mountains of southern Mexico haven't heard of Mickey Mouse. They grew up in isolated villages, and for them, basketball is a ticket to a better life.At home in Oaxaca, the youngsters are so poor that they play without shoes. But they were all wearing sneakers on Friday as they got to slap hands with Lakers players. And after winning an international tournament in Argentina, they've been dubbed the "barefoot giants of the mountains."

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — In the tightest finish yet, the United States preserved its perfect Duel in the Pool record on Saturday by beating the European All-Stars in a tiebreaker race.Both teams were locked on 131 points after 30 events over two days at the Tollcross Swimming Centre after the U.S fought back from 68-54 down on Friday.

Standing inside the football team's indoor practice facility earlier this month, Clark scanned the crowd of dozens of student-athletes — none of them football players — and told them the financially strapped athletic department was cutting their sport at the end of the 2013-14 academic year.

VAL GARDENA, Italy (AP) — Bode Miller, improving race by race, appears right on schedule to peak for the Sochi Olympics in February.After taking a year off to recover from left knee surgery, the two-time overall World Cup champion had his best speed finish of this season with a fifth-place result Saturday in the prestigious Val Gardena downhill. That came a day after placing eighth in a super-G to crack the top 10 for the first time in a speed event this year.

VAL GARDENA, Italy (AP) — Canada's Erik Guay won the World Cup downhill on Saturday, while Bode Miller was fifth in his best finish in a speed event this season.A year after missing out on the victory because of changing weather, Guay finished in 1 minute, 56.65 seconds down the Saslong course. He made up time over the last few gates to edge Kjetil Jansrud of Norway by 0.12 seconds.
