Juror: We believed suspect's girlfriend
DOVER, N.H. (AP) — A juror on the panel that convicted 31-year-old Seth Mazzaglia (muh-ZAYL'-ee-uh) of raping and killing a University of New Hampshire student says the jury believed the state's key witness.
Maria Clifford was one of 12 jurors who convicted Mazzaglia on Friday of killing 19-year-old Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott of Westborough, Massachusetts.
Clifford says the jury believed 20-year-old Kathryn McDonough, Mazzaglia's girlfriend, who admitted luring Marriott to their apartment, then helping Mazzaglia get rid of the body.
She says jurors thought McDonough had built a life based on lies but once on the stand, "had nothing left to lose" and told the truth. Clifford also said McDonough's effort to reconnect with her mother influenced the jury.
Clifford said to ensure an open mind, she treated Mazzaglia as if he were a family member.Associated Press
