(AP) — Gov. Maggie Hassan will head to a New Hampshire recreation area for a ceremonial signing of measures that bolster state precautions against oil pipeline spills.

Hassan on Tuesday will travel to the Durand Lake Recreation Area in Randolph to sign a bill that authorize state environment officials to impose more stringent preparation and response requirements on pipeline operators than federal law requires.

Hassan will also sign a second bill that empowers the New Hampshire Public Utility Commission to take over inspections of interstate pipelines in New Hampshire. Officials say that will allow for more frequent inspections than can be handled by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration.

The New Hampshire Audubon and other environmental advocates lobbied for enhanced protections after onshore spills in Michigan and Alaska.
