BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The natural gas utility seeking to extend its pipeline south from the Burlington area to Middlebury and Vergennes says it's going to cost 40 percent more than first thought.

Vermont Gas announced Wednesday afternoon that expanding gas service to Addison County will cost $35.6 million more than originally planned, to a total of about $121.6 million.

Vermont Gas says the new estimate is due to increased costs that coincide with a surge in natural gas production and changes to the project to accommodate people living along the route.

Vice President Jim Sinclair said it's "premature" to determine how rates will be affected, but they would still offer a savings over current energy costs in the area the pipeline will serve.

The Public Service Board is expected to review the increase.
