Welcome to September, historically the worst month for the stock market. Since 1945, the Standard & Poor's 500 index has slumped in September nearly six out of every 10 times, with an average loss of 0.6 percent.
That history gives the month a superstitious power for some investors; even though in recent years September has been pretty good. This month, however, could be especially troublesome and even the most confident of investors say they expect trading to turn turbulent.
