(AP) — Hunters are finding out if they have won permits to hunt moose in Vermont this fall.

Over 11,000 applications came in from hunters in 49 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin kicked off the lottery drawing Thursday by reading a selection of the winners.

The selection is done by a computerized random drawing of lottery applications.

The department is issuing 335 moose hunting permits by lottery this year. Of those, 285 will be issued for the regular Oct. 18-23 moose season and 50 permits will be issued for an archery moose season Oct. 1-7.

There was a 20 percent decline in the number of licenses given out this year due to estimated population density and moose management goals.
