(AP) — Brett Smiley has dropped out of the three-way Democratic primary in the Providence mayoral race and will throw his support behind Jorge Elorza.

Smiley said Friday he was withdrawing because he doesn't want either Council President Michael Solomon or independent Vincent A. "Buddy" Cianci Jr. to win.

Smiley said Solomon's election would be a step backward for the city. He also said Solomon is not the right person to take on Cianci.

Smiley will remain on the Sept. 9 ballot. Elorza will take on Solomon in the Democratic primary.

Smiley and Elorza spoke at a news conference Friday.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican Daniel Harrop and Cianci in the general election. Incumbent Mayor Angel Taveras is running for governor.
